Granary of India - West Godavari
Widely known as the Granary of India, having
colossal historical significance and one of the 23 districts of the state, West
Godavari is located in the state of Andhra Pradesh and covers a vast portion of
the delta area of the Godavari and the Krishna Rivers. Eluru is the district
headquarters of the city. The beautiful district is bounded on the north by
Khammam district and the Orissa State, East Godavari on the east, on the south

Pongal: One of the most awaited events in West
Godavari and all over the state, Pongal is celebrated with great passion and
vigor. The term Pongal signifies sweet dish of rice which is eaten on the
Pongal festival day. Jaggery, Cardamom and cashew nuts are also included in
this dish for the celebration. The local people dedicate this dish to God
Surya, The Sun God. It is one of the most imperative and well known festivals
held in the month of mid January every year.
Thaipusam: On the eve of Thaipusam, a procession of
devotees walks towards Murugan temples carrying ‘Chhatris’. They step forward
with beating drums, dancing and chanting ‘vel vel shakti vel’. Disciples offer
fruits and yellow or orange coloured flowers to Lord Murugan. They wear yellow
or orange coloured dresses to show their love towards their Lord.
Ganesh Festival or Ganesh Chaturthi: This festival is
held in the months of August-September and is one of the famous festivals in
West Godavari. It is celebrated with immense passion.
