Tourism in Karur district offers a wonderful opportunity for
both nature lovers as well as pilgrims from different parts of the state of
Tamil Nadu and various other places in India. The district of Karur is the
most-centrally located districts of Tamil Nadu with its headquarters at Karur.
The district is about three hundred and seventy one kilometers south-west of
Chennai (Madras), the capital of Tamil Nadu state. It is bounded by Namakkal
district in the north, Dindigul district in the south, Tiruchirapalli district
on the east and the district of Erode on the west. The district of Karur has
many big and old temples.
The Kalyana Venkattaramasami temple at Thanthoni, which is about five kilometers from Karur, is one of the most popular temples in this district. The shrine of the Lord is located on a raised portion of a hillock. The district of Karur is one of the seven sacred sthalams or places of Sivalayams and is well-known for famous Pasupathieswarer temple. The group of sculptures representing Pasupathiswaralingam as high as five feet, bathed by the milk oozing from the udder of a cow and Rangamatha are noted for their sculptural beauty. The temple in Pugalur, which is located to the north-west of Karur, is dedicated to Lord Subramania on a small hill at Velayuthanpalayam near Kaveri River. This temple is famous for its excellent work of sculpture. Sri Mariamman temple is another famous one, which is located in the heart of the district. It is celebrated periodically in the month of May by all groups of people, irrespective of caste and creed.
Apart from these temple there are several other temples of religious importance in this district of Tamil Nadu which are; Shree Kalyana Pasupatheeswarar Temple, Shree Abayapradhana Ranganathar Temple, Thanthondrimalai Shree Kalyana Venkataramanaswamy Temple, Shree Karuvur Mariyamman Temple, Pugazhimalai Shree Arupadai Murugan Temple, Attur Sholiyamman Temple, Vennaimalai Shree Balathandayuthapani Temple, Vangal Shree Pudhu Vangalamman Temple, Madhukkarai Sellandiyamman Temple, Mahadhanapuram Mahalaksmiamman Temple, Nerur Shree Sadhasiva Bhrameendhraal Temple, Manmangalam Puthu Kaliyamman Temple, Kadavur Vasantha perumal Temple, Kulithalai Kadambar Temple, Krishnarayapuram Tirukkanmalleswarar Temple, Kulithalai Neelameegha perumal Temple, Shivayam Siva Temple, Lalapet Iyyapan Temple, Iyermalai Siva Temple, Togamalai Murugan Temple, Rangamalai Malleeshwarar Temple, Vyakarapuriswarar temple of the thirteenth century and the Lalapet Sri Jaya Anjaneya temple which is three hundred years old.
