Kanyakumari district


The Kanyakumari District the “Land’s end of India” has various interesting tourist spots. It is famous as a holiday resort and health centre and also as pilgrim centre.

Kanyakumari Virgin Goddess BhagawathiAmman Temple    
Kanyakumari Temple is amidst picturesque surroundings just on the seashore. The image of the Goddess Kanyakumari is bewitching beauty and to those who seen it she will ever remain enshrined to their minds eye. The story goes that she wanted to marry Shiva and that could not take place. She preferred to remain a virgin (Kanya) by doing penance. A bath in the Kumari ghat where the three seas meet is considered to be sacred. The temple is open from 4.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.

Thiruvalluvar Statue    
To perpetuate the memory of Thiruvalluvar, the Tamil Nadu Government has installed a statue of Thiruvalluvar at Kanyakumari at the confluence of the three seas. The stone statue is 133 feet high including pedestal.

Vivekananda Rock        
The Vivekananda Rock is about 200 yards away from the temple. It is said that the Indian Philosopher Swami Vivekananda who came to Kanyakumari towards the close of 1892, was so much fascinated by the place that he swam to this rock and sat there in meditation for sometime. It was here, it is believed that and spread the messages of the Vadanta to the west. It is open from 9.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. and 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m.
   







Suchindrum
 
 
Suchindrum temple is situated four miles from Nagercoil and eight miles from Kanyakumari in Nagarcoil-Cape Comorin road. Suchindrum means the place where Indra worshipped God to make himself pure (Suchi). It is also called SIVINDRAM thereby meaning that Indra worshipped Lord Shiva here.

Thiruparappu
 
 
Thiruparappu is a panchayat town in Kanniyakumari district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is known for its waterfalls, and for an ancient Shiva temple, which is one of the twelve temples visited in the annual Shivalaya ottam pilgrimage. The river Kodayar makes it’s descend at Tirparappu and the water fall at this place is about 13km. from Pechiparai dam. The river bed is rocky and about 300 feet in length. The water falls from a height of nearly 50 feet and the water flows for about seven months in a year. The whole bed above the falls is one rocky mass which extends up to a distance of about quarter of a kilometer upstream where the famous Thirparappu weir has been constructed for supplying water to the paddy fields.

Sothavillai Beach
          This beach is about 10 Kms from Kanyakumari, is one of the best natural beaches of the district. The beach has shallow water and High sand dunes on the background. The beach here stretches over 4 km, which makes it one among the longest beaches in Tamil Nadu.

Pechiparrai
    Pechiparai Reservoir is a reservoir located 43 kilometers from the town of Nagercoil. The dam is surrounded by hills of the Western Ghats, and is a scenic place.

Udayagiri Fort
   
Enclosing an area of about 90 acres, with an isolated hill 260 feet (79 m) high, the fort contains an old foundry which was used for casting guns. , the fort has been turned into a bio-diversity park by the Tamilnadu forest department, with sites of historical importance, such as De Lannoy's tomb, remaining as protected archaeological sites under the Archaeological Department of India.

Padmanabhapuram Palace
   
The Padmanabhapuram Palace complex consists of several structures:
  • Mantrasala; literal meaning, King's Council Chamber
  • Thai Kottaram; literal meaning, Mother's Palace
  • Nataksala; literal meaning, the Hall of Performance
  • A four-storeyed building at the centre of the Palace
  • Thekee Kottaram; literal meaning, the Southern Palace

   
It is about 20 km from Nagercoil, and about 50 kilometers from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The palace complex is inside an old granite fortress around four kilometers long. The palace is located at the foot of the Veli Hills, which form a part of the Western Ghats

Ulakkai Aruvi Falls
   
Ulakkai Aruvi is a natural waterfall situated in Azhagiapandipuram village of Thovalai Taluk.  It is located at a distance of 40 Km from Kanyakumari. Water is available in this water fall in the summer season.  Many tourists come here for bathing and to enjoy the nature.  The pathway to this waterfall lies in the Reserve Forest
